Movies that Changed Society

Although the famously blunt producer Sam Goldwyn once said, “If you want to send a message, use Western Union,” American movies frequently address topics of great public controversy and try to influence viewers. We will survey some significant examples, such as The Grapes of Wrath (1940), To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), and Philadelphia (1993)to analyze how the filmmakers use their medium to sway audiences to their point of view.
