PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear UWC Members –
Welcome to Spring! It’s traditionally a time of new birth, renewal, and the beautiful fragrance of blossoms, blooms, and the sounds of robins. Earth day is April 22 this year. Earth Day was started by Gaylord Nelson, a US Senator from Wisconsin, in 1970. It is celebrated in a variety of ways, including tree planting, community cleanups, educational events, and rallies. It is celebrated at this time because it marks the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and the end of autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. The organizers of the first Earth Day wanted to maximize participation on college campuses. April 22 falls between spring break and final exams, making it a great time for rallies and other events. Additionally, it’s not associated with any major religious holidays making it a more neutral and inclusive choice.
At the University Women’s Club, we celebrate April by holding our annual Scholarship Luncheon, a time when we honor the 2024 UWC scholarship recipients. Our scholarships are awarded to deserving nontraditional students as they further their education. Eligibility is based on age (at least 24 years old); residency in the State of Colorado, having a delay or interruption in their college education, and having completed at least 12 semester hours at CU Boulder with a 3.0 or higher GPA.
If you attend our Luncheon, you will undoubtedly hear courageous stories from men and women seizing the opportunity for a second chance to pursue their education through the University of Colorado after experiencing life-altering circumstances. Presentation of our scholarship recipients is a celebration of renewal and is truly an uplifting event.
My own wish for you is that you can embrace the spring, think about renewal and rebirth, and take time to smell the flowers, hear the birds, and watch for the signs of spring.
Until next time,
Andie Kutinsky, 2023-2024 President
UWC NOTES
March Lecture Luncheon in Pictures
Our last lecture luncheon featured Dr. Rebecca Cox, who shared current research in sleep, insomnia, and aging – a subject of extreme interest to our membership. Dr. Cox provided compelling data to support behavior modification as an effective method of combating sleep disturbance. Bed should be for sleeping and not working, eating, texting, etc. Alas, aging does indeed affect our sleeping habits.
Opera Brunch in Pictures
A capacity crowd enjoyed lunch in the Aspen Room of the UMC prior to attending Titanic, the Musical in Macky Auditorium. Maestro Nicholas Carthy held the luncheon attendees spellbound with his colorful descriptions of plot intrigue and the musical score that we were about to hear. All agreed that the performance was of professional quality and accolades were profuse. Our gratitude to Sandy Johnson and her committee for organizing this much anticipated event.
Happy Hour/Tea Time Conversations via ZOOM
Happy Hour/Tea Time Conversations – a great way to get to know new UWC members, and a great way get to know old friends better. We meet via Zoom for about 50 minutes to an hour on the third Tuesday starting at 4:00 p.m. Contact Kathy Randall (katherineran at gmail dot com) to reserve a spot for any conversation or to sign up for automatic inclusion for the UWC year. With automatic inclusion you will always get the Zoom invitation, but you are not required to come.
April Topic: If you could magically spend one day anywhere in the world, all by yourself, where would you go and what would you do?
SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarship Luncheon
The University Women’s Club Annual Scholarship Luncheon will be held on Tuesday, April 16 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Boulder Country Club.
Join the University Women’s Club friends as we honor this year’s scholarship recipients with the theme, “Anything is Possible…..Reach for the Stars.”

The Scholarship Luncheon is one of UWC’s primary fundraising events in support of the scholarship program. Message from the Scholarship Chair
First let me recognize the hard work of the UWC Scholarship Committee members, who have recently so thoughtfully and carefully read through the many applications for our UWC Scholarships. These dedicated UWC Scholarship Committee members are Judith Auer, Joyce Bograd, Jane Cummins, Jean Manifesto, and Kathleen Salzberg. UWC Scholarships target non-traditional students at CU, individuals who have experienced a significant interruption in their educational journeys and also often faced real hardships in their lives.
A sincere thank you also goes out to our UWC membership, who have continued to donate so generously to the Scholarship Fund that we are again able to award scholarships of $5,000 to each of six wonderfully deserving students. I could not do better at conveying the importance of this work of the UWC than by quoting the words of one of our recent awardees, who said, “With this Scholarship you are changing lives like mine…. You have inspired me, motivated me, and given me a push to keep going… and believe it is worth it to dream big.”
At the upcoming Scholarship Luncheon at the Boulder Country Club on April 16, our committee members will introduce you to the 2024 Scholarship recipients. At this event, you will be able to hear directly from these awardees a little about their life journeys as well as their future goals and dreams. These vignettes will give you an idea of how important your donations are for these remarkable young people.
It is so easy to donate to ensure that the UWC can continue its now more than 40-year-run of providing Scholarships to non-traditional students at CU. Just go to the Scholarship link where you can easily make an online donation. And remember, you can also donate to UWC when signing up for UWC events or even when grocery shopping (see article below).
Hope to see you at the Scholarship Luncheon on April 16!

DID YOU KNOW?
April Fools’ Day is not a public holiday in any country except Ukraine, where the first of April is an official holiday in the city of Odessa. The festival normally includes a large parade in the city centre, free concerts, street fairs and performances. (How sadly ironic this is in war-torn Ukraine today.)
April 1 has been associated with ‘foolishness’ as early as Geoffrey Chaucer‘s The Canterbury Tales (1392). Throughout the centuries countries around the globe have reserved April 1 as a day for playing pranks, community celebrations, and foolishness.
CU Events Worthy of Mention
- The world renowned Conference on World Affairs (CWA) will be held on the CU campus from April 9 – 12 this year. The CWA has been bringing thought leaders from across the globe together for discussion of a variety of topics for over 75 years. This event is free and open to the public. See colorado.edu/cwa
- International Festival – The CU International Festival is a celebration of cultures and traditions from all around the world. It has been around since 1990, and has continued to successfully promote diversity among students and the Boulder community. To this day, it remains the largest student organized event on campus and is free and open to the public. This event won ‘Cultural Event of the Year’ in 2018 and 2023 and will be held this year on Sunday, April 21 from 3:00-7:00 p.m. in the University Memorial Center, Glenn Miller Ballroom on the CU Boulder campus.
Looking Ahead
2024 Honors Reception
Hear Ye’, and Here Ye’ All! Come together for our free, festive, and final gathering under the Tent on the South Terrace of the University Memorial Center (UMC) on Tuesday, May 21 at 2:30 p.m. The Margaret Willard Award winner will be revealed, and we will pay tribute to returning, out-going and incoming Board officers and committee chairs.
A delicious array of hors d’oeuvres will await you as you share camaraderie and enjoy songs by CU’s talented Buffoons!
Please look for an Evite (PunchBowl) in early April and R.S.V.P. to it by April 30. If you haven’t received an Evite by April 9, please call Anne Hudson, Chair, at 720-536-5654.
