President’s Message

Andie Kutinsky

Welcome to October!

October ushers in a new month and a fresh message. I trust everyone is looking forward to the engaging events and interest groups that accompany this season as the year unfolds.

Happy Hour / Teatime Discussions

One of our most cherished gatherings, the Happy Hour/Teatime group, invites you to join a vibrant community of international women—some of the most fascinating individuals you could hope to meet. This month’s theme centers on sharing experiences involving unique modes of transportation, such as helicopters, limousines, coaches, hot air balloons, horse wagons, or other memorable journeys. I am particularly excited to share a story about a camel trip in the Middle East where my friends and I found ourselves lost—just one of many tales that await. The event will take place on October 14, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. We look forward to welcoming both regular attendees and new faces who signed up at our Welcome Coffee on September 9.

Lecture Lunch Series

We also anticipate the launch of our first Lecture Lunch in a series of five. The featured speaker, Judy Amabile, will address “Constructive Disagreement and Bona Fide Progress,”an exceptionally pertinent topic for today’s world. This session promises to be highly popular, so please reserve your spot early, as space may be limited. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, October 7, 2025, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

On A Personal Note

Regrettably, I will not be able to attend, as I will be celebrating my anniversary with my husband in Madrid, Spain. Featured above is an image of the Royal Palace in Madrid. I look forward to sharing photos from Madrid and Barcelona with you all.
Wishing everyone a wonderful month ahead. Remain grounded in service and sisterhood with the University Women’s Club.

Andie Kutinsky
2025-26 President

UWC Notes

Membership Coffee – A Story in Pictures

The UWC Member Coffee, the inaugural event of the 2025-26 year, took place on a sunny morning in September. More than 100 women attended! What a great start to the year!

If you click on a photo you can see the full, enlarged version.

Membership

To date, about 2/3 of UWC members have renewed membership by paying their 2025 dues. If you have not, THIS IS THE MONTH TO DO IT!

After October 15 we will publish the UWC Directory and will update the membership lists, including the master email list. If you have not renewed dues, you will stop receiving communications from UWC about events, deadlines, and interest group invitations. We have sent an individual email to each 2024-5 member who has not yet renewed to remind you of the deadline – if you are not planning on remaining a member, please let us know so we can update records.

Renewing is easy – just click here: https://boulderuwc.org/about/uwc-membership/membership-join-renew/

For those who have renewed – now is also the time to let your friends know about the wonderful UWC and its many possibilities for camaraderie, activities and friendship. New Member chair will be delighted to welcome any and all!

This is my last message as Membership Chair – it has been an honor and joy to serve in this role and to get to know so many of you either in person or vicariously as I match names to information over the year. I am moving to Seattle (where I will welcome visitors!). I doubt there is a club as unique as UWC and will look forward to keeping abreast of all its doings from future reports in MESSAGES.

The new Membership Carol Etges will now be your contact through UWCmembershipchair@gmail.com. Have a wonderful year!

Merry Bullock, Membership Chair on the way out

We are excited to share our 2025-2026 lecture luncheons that cover a wide variety of topics presented by exceptionally knowledgeable speakers. New this year, rather than the February lecture when parking is a challenge, we will hold a lecture in May when parking should be easier after the students have left campus. The location of all five lectures will be Room 235 in the University Memorial Center, located at 1669 Euclid Avenue at the corner of Broadway and Euclid on the CU campus in Boulder.

Opera Brunch

This coming year, the University Women’s Club won’t be seeing an opera, instead, we will be treated to a production in Macky Auditorium of the beloved musical, Oklahoma.

Save the date: Sunday, March 8th, 2026, starting at 11:00 for a fabulous brunch, a lecture by Maestro Carthy and the musical, Oklahoma.  This all adds up to a memorable day of camaraderie and entertainment that you do not want to miss.

Message from the Chair

An update on UWC scholarship awardee, Bryan Gager.

It is so gratifying when we honor the scholarship recipients at our April luncheon each year, but we also like to follow up with them to further appreciate how our donations impact their lives after obtaining their undergraduate degrees from the University of Colorado. I spoke with a previous winner, Bryan Gager, on the telephone recently.

Bryan grew up in Arvada, the youngest of eight children. After high school he worked and traveled for a few years. At 22 Bryan enrolled as a freshman at CU Boulder, living in Golden and commuting to classes for two years, as he could not afford to live in Boulder. He worked as a mobile car painter for car dealerships during the week and as a barista on weekends.

He became interested in water resource management and decided to pursue a double major in Geography; and Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Bryan applied for financial aid and was awarded a $5,000 UWC scholarship. He commented that he enjoyed meeting his sponsor, Kathleen Salzberg, and attended the annual scholarship luncheon in 2022. He also was engaged in the day’s events while meeting our members and interacting with his fellow scholarship students. Later he volunteered that the activities that day gave him a sense of belonging to something.

Bryan Gager

The scholarship was extremely helpful to him. It allowed him to quit both his jobs and move to Boulder. That flexibility provided  him the ability to obtain experience and establish connections while working in laboratories relevant to his academic interests.  One of thoselaboratories was closely aligned with mountain lake water research. His work in the laboratory led him to interacting with the professors who were the principal research investigators and to writing an honors thesis based on his research.

The day after graduating this year, he began a full-time position as the lead Aquatic Research Technician at CU’s Mountain Research Station in the Long Term Ecological Research program on water analysis of the Green Lakes near Brainard Lake outside of Boulder.

Even though my only interactions with him were on the telephone, I could tell this young man is a kind, bright, and motivated individual with all the marks of success, personally and professionally.

Please donate generously to our scholarship fund. It makes such a difference when these students receive a financial boost that makes their paths a little easier to finish their undergraduate degrees.

Call for Nominations

Elected UWC Board Positions

The UWC Nominating Committee is tasked with recommending nominees for President-Elect, Secretary-Elect, and Treasurer-Elect to serve on the UWC Board next year (2026-2027). The elected persons attend board meetings for one year as “elect officers,” to become familiar with the tasks of the executive positions, and to be available as back-up. They then serve the following year (2027-2028) as President, Secretary, or Treasurer.

Here is a brief description of each position:

  • President: Serves as the UWC figurehead and provides overall executive leadership. chairs the Executive Board, and provides supportive leadership to Board decisions and Board members.
  • Secretary: Attends and takes minutes at all Executive Board Meetings and General Membership Meetings.
  • Treasurer: Responsible for the oversight, management, and reporting of UWC finances including bank account maintenance, financial transaction oversight, budget development, monthly financial reporting, and all tax filings. The treasurer does not need to be a CPA for this role; however, good bookkeeping skills, and skill with Excel and QuickBooks are ideal.

If you would like to be considered for one of the “elect” positions or would like to recommend someone, please contact any member of the Nominating Committee which consists of Janet Brewer, General Membership Representative and Andie Kutinsky as Board Representative. If you would like more information, please contact Kathy Randall at katherineran at gmail.com

Did You Know?

October with its palette of crimson and gold is not only a month to stimulate our visual senses, but there is a plethora of interesting activities to entice us to enjoy fall on the University of Colorado Boulder campus and beyond.

Music and Theater

A complete listing of musical and theatrical events scheduled at CU this fall can be found by clicking the links below:

•     Faculty Tuesdays – free concerts hosted by the College of Music
•     Performing Arts Events: cupresents.org

What’s Happening at the Fiske Planetarium?

Did you know that CU has a lovely planetarium on the Boulder campus that has a full spectrum of programing: concerts and special events, full-dome films, laser music shows, live faculty talks, science under the dome, and star shows.
Google Fiske Planetarium for information about future events.

If you know of anyone who has a Medicaid or EBT/SNAP card, they will be admitted to the Fiske Planetarium shows for $1.00.

A Moment in CU History

One year after Colorado became a state and the University of Colorado was founded (1876), the first students were enrolled on the Boulder campus. Mary Rippon became the first female professor at CU in 1878. The first graduating class (six men) was celebrated in 1882. Not until four years later (1886) did the first female graduate from CU, seven years before Colorado women were given the right to vote.  (Excerpted from Celebrating 100 Years 1919-2019 compiled and published by the University Women’s Club Centennial History Committee.)

CU by the Numbers: 2025

University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) reported a preliminary fall enrollment of approximately 38,458 students, with a 4.1% increase in total undergraduate enrollment, and it was ranked #98 in National Universities by U.S. News & World Report. The university’s 2025 data includes a 19:1 student-faculty ratio, a four-year graduation rate of 58%, and a median graduate salary of $54,939. CU Boulder also ranked #2 nationally for Peace Corps volunteers as of July 2025.

On the Road Again: Exploring Local Treasures Together

Are you looking for a way to get out, learn something new, and enjoy the company of others? Consider joining On the Road Again, a popular interest group that explores cultural, historical, and entertaining destinations in Boulder County and beyond.

The group schedules four to six outings each year, traveling to nearby communities to take in a wide variety of activities and events. Past excursions have included tours, museums, theatrical productions, visits to botanical gardens, and other regional attractions. A highlight each year is the Holiday English Afternoon Tea in December, a festive tradition that brings members together to celebrate the season.

Each outing offers opportunities to learn, laugh, and connect. After each event, members often gather for coffee, snacks, or a light meal to share impressions of the day, turning each trip into a shared experience that is as social as it is entertaining.

Go to https://boulderuwc.org/interest-groups/interest-group-sign-up-sheet/ to join On The Road Again and receive email notifications about upcoming events.

The group ranged from people who had seen every episode and movie to a few who had never seen the show, which made for a great discussion.

Deann O’Donovan, a new UWC member, joined us and has volunteered to cochair the committee.

Members pictured include Kathleen Newton, Marge Riddle, Lorraine Sexton, Ellie Bertram, Jacque Thomas, Mary Baumgardner, Dorothy Coltrin, DD Mallard, Robin Moskal, Ruth Harvey, Jane Etzel, Janet Freeman, and Sharon Nehls.
