PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Our issue this month begins with UWC events coming up. I am so excited about these upcoming events and the chance to connect with all the wonderful women of UWC! It’s hard to believe that we’ve already had our final Lecture Luncheon. What a great series of speakers we have had, thanks to the outstanding work of the Program Committee.
And now, we get to see who this year’s recipients are for six scholarships! You’ll want to meet them at the Boulder Country Club on Tuesday, April 15 at 11:00am. Register yourself and a friend, swing by your friend’s house to pick them up, and go to 7350 Clubhouse Road in Boulder. This year’s theme, “On The Path To Your Future” represents the feeling we have as your Scholarship Fund donations bring a world of possibilities to our young winners. Hurry to register by the March 26 deadline! The diligent attention that the Scholarship Committee showed in selecting each recipient is so appreciated; their work is such a rewarding way to serve University Women’s Club.
The Honors Reception begins at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, in the University Memorial Center Plaza Tent! This is an annual event where we honor women who have generously contributed so much to UWC and the University of Colorado. There is NO CHARGE for attending, but you do need to register. This year professional violinist Mindy Anderson will provide delightful musical interlude, taken from her repertoire that includes classical pieces, operatic arias, jazz standards, Broadway hits, pop, folk, and film music.
An assortment of hors d’oeuvres will be a delightful indulgence, and beautiful bouquets at the colorful tables will surely please you. Parking on the campus should be less of a problem because CU classes will have ended. Attendees can also anticipate the presentation of the prestigious Margaret Willard Award. Hearing the winners’ stories broadens our awareness of the ways in which we to can connect and contribute to our larger community. We also take time at this reception to recognize and honor all those who have served University Women’s Club with their time, leadership and service. These are moments to solidify friendships, celebrate each other and welcome in the next president. In passing the gavel, we assure the continuance of the cohesion and power that our interest groups, philanthropy, and programing have provided for over 108 years.
Come celebrate the University Women’s Club in May!
Anne Hudson
2024-2025 President
UWC NOTES
Membership Update
The UWC membership is currently over 340 women strong – and we are active! Collectively, we have attended 5 lecture luncheons (total luncheon attendees exceed xxx), are engaged with xx interest groups, have contributed robustly to the scholarship fund, and provide a place for women to meet, form friendships, provide mutual support, and explore and discuss.

Follow-up to the 5th Lecture Luncheon – Using Our Outdoor Voices
Merry Bullock, UWC Member
Dean Lolita Inniss’s talk offered some wise words and inspiration about the importance of asking questions, being alert, and using our voice. This article is one step in that process.
I visited the Colorado congressional delegation last month as part of a psychologists’ “fly in” to speak with legislators. We met with staff legislative assistants for Senators Hickenlooper and Bennett, and for Representatives from across Colorado. They were happy to see us and had a strong and consistent message: our legislators need to hear from us! They need to know our concerns – about the country, the world, our local communities, and our personal lives. They also told us that it is really valuable for them to hear stories, personal reflections, and personal concerns.
So how do we do that?
- Phone Calls
There is an APP “Five Calls” that makes this REALLY easy. You tell it your location and it lets you know whom to contact.
The first page of the app asks “what is important to you?” and lists a long list of issues from economic to world to local. Selecting one of these brings another page with details on the issue, and there is then the relevant legislators for this issue are listed at the bottom of the page.
Also listed is a button to “see your script” and a phone number to call.
It is so easy to be active and engaged using this app!!
- Post Cards
You can also send postcards to your representatives
Here is contact information:
- Senator Michael Bennet, 202-224-5852 (DC). Address: Russell Senate Office Building 261, 2 Constitution Ave NE, Washington, DC 20510
- Senator John Hickenlooper, 202-224-5941 (DC). Address: Russell Senate Office Building, 2 Constitution Ave NE, Washington, DC 20002
- Congressman Joe Neguse (CD-2), 202-225-2161,2400 Rayburn HOB. Washington, DC 20515
- You can also send emails. This may be the most effective means of sending your Personal stories (losing employment, how important social security is to you, experiences of your friends, colleagues, neighbors)
Whatever your opinion on issues before us, it is important, easy, and effective to use your voice. We have always been a participatory democracy and this is an especially important time to participate!
How to Attend to UWC Events at University Memorial Center (UMC)
Consider Taking the Bus
Note: All of the RTD busses require exact change.
-
RTD Trip Planner. Enter the address from which you are starting, then enter the address at which you want to end (Broadway and Euclid Ave, Boulder) and the time at which you want to arrive. Click “Plan Your Trip” and RTD will figure out your choice of routes including any transfers you have to make.
-
Consider using the following bus routes in Boulder: the SKIP, the 204, and the DASH, all stop on Broadway very close to the UMC. Other buses, including the STAMPEDE and the HOP, stop on 18th Street just behind the UMC.
-
Catch the HOP at the 29th Street Mall – The HOP is an easy ride from the mall and runs about every 10 minutes. Catch the clockwise bus on 29th Street just across from the former Macy’s entrance. It will take you to 18th Street behind UMC. When you return, take the counter-clockwise bus from the east side of 18thStreet. The HOP goes in a loop, so either direction will get you there, but it is a shorter route on the south side of the loop.
-
Park at the Table Mesa Park-N- Ride – 5170 Table Mesa Drive, Boulder. Board the DASH toward downtown Boulder. The bus stops on Broadway at Euclid Ave. There is no cost to park at the Table Mesa Park-N-Ride for the first 24 hours. The cost of the bus ride for seniors is only $1.50 round trip for the first 3 hours. If you have an EcoPass, you ride for free.
-
Park at the Table Mesa parking lot near Chase Bank and get on the SKIP, which stops on the north side of the Bank and takes you to the UMC. The cost is the same as the DASH.
Share Rides
Do you need a ride to the UWC Lecture Luncheons? Can you offer a ride to another UWC member to the Lecture Luncheons? The UWC Board is trying an experiment to see if we can facilitate attending the UWC Lecture Luncheons. Sign up here!!!
Drive and Park in Euclid Parking (Parking Garage Next to the UMC)
Options for Payment
- Pay at the Pay-station (Enter your license plate number and pay by cash or credit card.) The price is $2.00/hour for up to 3 hours. You do not need to place the receipt on the car dashboard.
- Download the ParkMobile app on your mobile phone. Enter the Zone Number found on the Pay-station, and select the desired number of hours to park. The duration can be adjusted as needed on your phone. (Link to ParkMobile – App for your phone)
Great news! The lower levels in the garage are no longer reserved for permit holders. The whole garage is available for visitor parking.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Message from the Scholarship Chair
The UWC scholarship committee has been busy evaluating applications for the $5,000 scholarships we provide to up to 6 CU non-traditional undergraduates.
What materials do we use to evaluate applications?
We receive applications from the CU Financial Affairs Office. This year each applicant was identified to us only by a number rather than their name. The application form provided basic information about when students expect to graduate, as well as short answer questions to reveal family or personal responsibilities, challenges or financial constraints that have impacted them. Students also describe extracurricular activities, work /internship experience, honors and awards, grade point average, and their major.
We also receive two essays, which really help to identify those students who have determination and perseverance in the face of challenges. One essay asks about students’ future career plans and intended accomplishments. The second asks them to describe their own unique perspective they bring to the university, and how their personal experiences, skills, and background contribute to their potential to make a positive impact on the future.
The essays are an opportunity for students to demonstrate their writing skills, as well as to reveal in some detail the obstacles, setbacks and hardships they have overcome. All the students we reviewed revealed their dreams and aspirations, both personally and professionally. Each of the six scholarship recipients chosen this year had every excuse to abandon their academic goal to finish their education, but each has the grit, determination, discipline and sheer drive to be unstoppable.
Our scholarship recipients will share their extraordinary stories with you on April 15 at our annual Scholarship Luncheon. They will inspire you. It will make you proud to know that your donations are helping these remarkable individuals complete their undergraduate degrees and contribute to this country’s future.
I want to recognize the committee members who attended meetings, evaluated applications, and reached a consensus to choose the scholarship recipients. Thank you to committee members Kathleen Salzberg, Jane Cummings, Rebecca Batizy and Ruth Hammer. Each committee member “sponsors” a student and will introduce that person at the luncheon.
It is easy to donate to ensure that the UWC can continue a greater than 40-year history of providing our scholarships to non-traditional students at CU Boulder.

DID YOU KNOW?
April 1 – April Fool’s Day
April Fools’ Day has been celebrated for several centuries by different cultures, though its exact origins remain a mystery. April Fools’ Day traditions include playing hoaxes or practical jokes on others. Speculation of its origin includes the notion that this celebration was tied to the vernal equinox, or first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, when Mother Nature fooled people with changing, unpredictable weather. It is assumed in literary circles that April 1 has been associated with ‘foolishness’ as early as Geoffrey Chaucer‘s The Canterbury Tales (1392).
April 22 – Earth Day
Our Power, Our Planet – the theme of Earth Day 2025.
The theme encourages people to support renewable energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
What led to the adoption of Earth Day?
(Information taken directly from earthday.org.)
“The decades leading up to the first Earth Day, April 22, 1970, Americans were consuming vast amounts of leaded gas through massive and inefficient automobiles. Industry belched out smoke and sludge with little fear of the consequences from either the law or bad press. Air pollution was commonly accepted as the smell of prosperity. Until this point, mainstream America remained largely oblivious to environmental concerns and how a polluted environment threatens human health.”
“The stage was set for change with the publication of Rachel Carson’s New York Times bestseller Silent Spring in 1962. The book represented a watershed moment, selling more than 500,000 copies in 24 countries as it raised public awareness and concern for living organisms, the environment and the inextricable links between pollution and public health.”
“Earth Day 1970 would come to provide a voice to this emerging environmental consciousness, and putting environmental concerns on the front page.”
