PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Norma Portnoy, 2022-23 President

March may be named after the Roman god of war, but it’s one of the happiest months on the calendar. Animals start waking up from hibernation and Daylight Savings Time returns. Spring will officially arrive soon, bringing longer and warmer days with flowers popping up all over.

Speaking of flowers, I find it interesting that one UWC Interest Group from the 1950s remains active today, the Original Book Group, along with several others from past decades, including the Garden Group. The Music Group, Bridge Group, several Book Groups, Needlecraft, Out to Lunch, and the Hiking Group. The first Interest Group was a Drama Group, which was created back in 1937, eighty-five years ago – before most of us were born.

Interest Groups are a vital part of the University Women’s Club. They provide community and congeniality all year long. We currently conduct twenty-six Interest Groups, all of which are open to dues-paying members, subject to capacity limitations. To learn about the groups and how to become actively engaged in the groups of your choice, click here: https://boulderuwc.org/interest-groups/.

Would you like to start a new interest group? No problem. To start a new interest group, you’ll need a minimum of five members, including a chairperson.

Feel free to contact Interest Group Chair Linda Nordberg at [email protected] with questions about Interest Groups.

Best Gift Idea EVER!

Can’t figure out what to buy for your sister’s 50th wedding anniversary or your grandchild’s graduation or a friend’s milestone birthday? UWC has the answer! We have a new way for you to make donations in honor of special occasions or milestones in your life or the lives of family or friends.

In addition to regular (no special reason) donations, you can make a tribute donation in honor of a special person, in memory of someone special to you to celebrate their legacy, or in honor of a special occasion to celebrate a birthday, graduation, wedding, or other special milestone of your family and friends.

Plus donating to UWC is easier than ever! We’ve made some improvements to the UWC website to make it easier and quicker for you to make donations to the scholarship fund.

On the home page, you’ll find a Donate menu item on the right side of the menu bar.

The display dropdown menu includes a page describing ways you can donate funds for UWC scholarships (and support UWC through shopping), and a page where you can directly make a donation.

Join a UWC Committee or Join the Board to:

  • Plan Events
  • Select Award Recipients
  • Perform operational functions – skills sought incude Excel, PowerPoint, MailMerge, web editing, graphics editing, financial accounting, zoom hosting….

If you have any or all of these skills or philanthropic leanings, then we would welcome you to join one of the several committees that make the UWC the exciting, educational, fun-loving, and philanthropic organization that it is.

Please contact Norma Portnoy at [email protected] with subject line Volunteer for UWC tasks.

Opera Brunch

Last Chance to Register!!

March 19, 2023 – 11:30 am Brunch (UMC AspenRoom), 2:00 pm Opera (Macky)  Cendrillon by Jules Massenet

Special luncheon including a lecture on Massenet’s Cendrillon by Maestro Nicholas Carthy, the Director of the CU Eklund Opera Program, and conductor for Cendrillon.

Cendrillon is an opulent interpretation of Cinderella: romantic, wistful and full of grace. Believe it or not, the Disney interpretation of Cinderella is not the only version there is. Massenet’s Cendrillon is based on a version of the popular fairy tale written in 1698 by French author Charles Perrault. The opera will be sung in French with English subtitles.

Sandy Johnson, Opera Brunch Chair

Deadline to Register is MARCH 4, 2023 – register by clicking the green button!

Happy Hour/Tea Time Conversations via ZOOM

Happy Hour/Tea Time Conversations – a great way to get to know new UWC members, and a great way get to know old friends better. We meet via Zoom for about 50 minutes to an hour on the first and third Tuesdays at 4:00. Contact Kathy Randall (katherineran at gmail dot com) to reserve a spot for any conversation or to sign up for automatic inclusion for the UWC year. With automatic inclusion you will always get the Zoom invitation, but you are not required to come.

March 7: What are three things you cannot live without (actual things, not experiences or feelings) – items you would have to replace right away if they were lost. (Thank you, Norma Portnoy, for this suggestion.)

March 21: Do you sometimes have nonfictional feelings for fictional characters? Tell us about them.

Scholarship Luncheon!

The 2023 University Women’s Club Scholarship Luncheon is Tuesday, April 18 from 11:00 a.m. –  2:00 p.m. at the Boulder Country Club.

This luncheon is one of UWC’s important fundraising events for the scholarship program. This year donations are not automatically included in the luncheon cost because the country club costs increased and we want to keep the attendance cost within reason. Please keep this in mind and add a donation with your registration!

  • The Luncheon menu is Roasted Red Pepper Coulis Cauliflower Risotto with Glazed Mushrooms and Truffle Oil or Chicken Florentine with Creamed Spinach Souffle.
  • The Fashion show will be hosted by Chico’s with UWC models.

The scholarship luncheon and fashion show cost is $45. You are encouraged to come and bring guests!
You will have the opportunity to make a contribution to the Scholarship Fund when you register for the luncheon. Please take this opportunity to continue to support the success of the UWC scholarships when you register.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Message from the Scholarship Chair

Your Scholarship Committee has recently been reading through the stories of our many Scholarship applicants. We always face difficult decisions in this process as we learn of the amazing determination so many of our applicants have shown in overcoming difficult life circumstances. But it is also very gratifying to be able to play a small part in helping those students as they pursue their dreams.  Our committee always recognizes that it is you – our members – who make this all possible, and you have continued to do so, even during these last difficult pandemic years.  So thank you, as always, for your generosity!

And be sure to mark your calendars for our Annual Scholarship Luncheon on April 18, 11:00 a.m.  at the Boulder Country Club. This will be a wonderful get together where our six recipients will be introduced and you can hear from them directly about how grateful they are for the support you have provided. While you are registering for the Scholarship Luncheon online, be sure to note that you can make a donation to the Scholarship Fund, so that we can continue this important mission of the UWC!

And, if you haven’t yet signed up for the King Soopers or Safeway charitable rewards programs, check out the About Donations page to learn how to sign up for these great programs, which enable automatic donations to UWC at NO cost to you!

DID YOU KNOW?

March 8 – International Women’s Day
2023 campaign theme: #EmbraceEquity. A focus on gender equity needs to be part of every society’s DNA, and it’s critical to understand the difference between equity and equality. Read more about this here.

March 12 – Daylight Savings Time
Daylight Saving Time in 2023 begins on Sunday, March 12.

In the United States, Daylight Saving Time starts on the Second Sunday of March and ends on the First Sunday of November. Only Hawaii and most of Arizona choose not to observe  Daylight Saving Time.

Daylight saving time was originally enacted to conserve energy and fuel by giving people more sun in their days. On June 3, 2022,  Gov. Jared Polis signed the Daylight Saving Time Year Round measure, HB22-1297, into law for Colorado. This measure would keep daylight saving time and get rid of standard time in the state. But hurdles remain. Want more information about this subject? Google the “Sunshine Protection Act of 2021.”

March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day
St. Patrick’s Day falls on March 17 each year. Whether you’re Irish or not, chances are you’ve celebrated St. Patrick’s Day at some point in your life.

Though the day has morphed over the years into more of a secular celebration, St. Patrick’s Day was originally a religious holiday intended to commemorate the life of St. Patrick, the man credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland.
