Upcoming UWC Events

Lecture Luncheon #2: CLICK HERE TO REGISTER

Tuesday, November 10, 2026 – 10:30 a.m.- 1:00 p.m.; UMC Glenn Miller Ballroom
(Deadline for reservations is October 23, 2026 at 6:00 p.m.)

Sarah Kozloff

Sarah Kozloff, Retired Vassar Film Professor
They’re Writing Big Studio Contracts, But Not for Me – Women Independent Directors

Sarah will explore both the promise and the challenges of independent filmmaking for women directors. Beginning with a historical perspective, she will show clips from the work of pioneering and influential filmmakers including Ida Lupino, Claudia Weill, Susan Seidelman, and Debra Granik. She will contrast their careers with those of male counterparts such as Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh, and Paul Thomas Anderson, examining why talented women directors have often faced greater obstacles in achieving sustained success.

President’s Message

Showing Up at the Feeder

Berry Todd

I added a bird feeder to my garden this summer and was delighted to see a growing community of finches, sparrows, and chickadees congregating around the bounty. Before long, others joined in—including elusive hummingbirds—creating a lively flurry of energy right outside my window.

Just as birds are drawn to a feeder, our board members tend to return year after year to perch together with satisfaction. Last year, when I flew off the Board to pursue other interests, I noticed my sense of connection to the club started to shrink. Serving on the Board truly expands my enjoyment of UWC membership, simply because I get to be part of planning everything that happens beneath the UWC canopy.

Our canopy is larger than ever. Now that our membership numbers are back on solid ground, my focus is to encourage every member to “show up at the feeder” and make the most of their membership through deeper personal involvement. The quality of your participation is what strengthens our club and helps our resilient community take flight.

Here are a few ways you can enhance your participation this year:

  • Stay informed: Read MESSAGES whenever it hits your inbox.
  • Expand your horizons: Join a new interest group or two—or step up to become an interest group chairperson.
  • Branch out: Make a point to introduce yourself to someone new at the next lecture luncheon.
  • Lend a hand: Offer a ride to a lecture luncheon or volunteer at the registration table to help pass out nametags.
  • Share your perspective: Submit a photo for the website.
  • Get involved behind the scenes: Join a subcommittee alongside our experienced board members to learn how our events come together.
  • Answer the call: If a member of the Nominating Committee reaches out to ask for your help, please consider how vital every single member is to keeping our flock in flight.

Feeder Tip: If pesky squirrels keep dismantling your bird feeders, try a seed mix coated in hot chili pepper. It deters the squirrels, but birds can’t taste the heat—leaving you free to sit back and enjoy the flurry of activity!

Cheers,
Berry Todd

Big news for UWC members!

We’re thrilled to share that UWC has been designated as a Google for Nonprofits organization. This upgrade strengthens our communication system and supports the work we do together.

The Great Horse Flu: A Forgotten Contagion and the Face of Reconstruction America

Imagine a world without cars, trucks, trains, or tractors—a world in which nearly everything depended on horses, donkeys, and mules. Then, in the fall of 1872, those animals began falling mysteriously ill. Over the next fifteen months, a remarkably contagious strain of influenza sickened as many as 90% of the equines across Canada, the United States, and parts of Cuba, Mexico, and Central America. The consequences were staggering.

“We Just Did It”: Colorado Women in World War II

Four months before the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Mildred McClellan Melville, a member of the Denver Woman’s Press Club, predicted that war would come for the United States and that its long arm would reach into the lives of all Americans. And reach it did. Colorado women from every corner of the state enlisted in the military, joined the workforce, and volunteered on the home front.

Women Who Reached for the Stars, Boulder’s Place in Space, and What’s Next in Space

Message from the Chair

Giving with Purpose: Ways to Support UWC Boulder Scholarships

At UWC Boulder, generosity has always been part of who we are. Since 1982, the University Women’s Club has supported scholarships for non-traditional CU Boulder undergraduates.  These students often balance coursework with jobs, family responsibilities, financial need, and personal perseverance. Your support helps make their educational goals possible.

As you consider your charitable giving this year, there are several meaningful and potentially tax-efficient ways to support the UWC Scholarship Fund.

  • Make a Cash Gift

Cash gifts remain one of the simplest ways to give.

Beginning with tax year 2026, taxpayers who do not itemize may be able to deduct up to $1,000 of cash contributions to certain qualified organizations, or up to $2,000 for married couples filing jointly.

  • Consider a Qualified Charitable Distribution

For donors age 70½ or older, a Qualified Charitable Distribution, often called a QCD, may be an especially thoughtful way to give. A QCD is generally a nontaxable distribution made directly from an IRA trustee to an eligible charitable organization, and it may count toward a donor’s required minimum distribution.

Unlike a regular charitable contribution, the portion of a QCD excluded from income generally is not also claimed as a charitable deduction. For 2026,  the QCD annual exclusion amount is up to $111,000.

  • Give Appreciated Securities or Other In-Kind Assets

Some donors may wish to give appreciated investments; such as, publicly traded stock, mutual fund shares, or other securities. When appreciated property is donated to a qualified organization, the IRS generally allows the donor to use the fair market value of the property when figuring the deduction, though special rules and limitations may apply.

  • Give in Honor, in Memory, or for a Special Occasion

A gift to UWC can also be a meaningful way to celebrate someone special. UWC allows donors to mark a contribution as a regular gift, an “in honor” gift, an “in memory” gift, or a gift recognizing a special occasion. These gifts can celebrate a milestone, recognize a friend or family member, or honor someone’s legacy while supporting scholarships for deserving students.

However you choose to give, your generosity helps open doors for students who have shown determination, resilience, and a commitment to completing their education. Every contribution strengthens UWC Boulder’s long tradition of service, scholarship, and community.

Please consult your tax advisor regarding your personal circumstances and confirm gift procedures with UWC before making a contribution. Tax rules are complex and may change, and the best giving strategy depends on each donor’s financial and tax situation.

The UWC Nominating Committee is tasked with recommending nominees for President-elect, Secretary-elect, and Treasurer-elect to serve on the UWC Board next year (2027-2028). The elected persons attend board meetings for one year as “elect officers,” to become familiar with the tasks of the executive positions, and to be available as back-up. They then serve the following year (2028-2029) as President, Secretary, or Treasurer.

Tell Me More About…the Boulder Public Library

We all know that libraries are about borrowing books, but they are so much more. Need a movie, an audio book, music CD, newspaper, or magazine (paper or digital)? Of course you’ll find these at the library too, but at the Boulder Public Library, that is only the beginning.

Reserve a Room: Is your Interest Group overflowing your living room? Reserve a meeting room at the library, for free. Meeting rooms are found in all the branches and come in various sizes. Rooms can be reserved up to 16 weeks in advance, for up to 16 hours per month, by a group of 5 or more.

Use a Computer; Print a Document: Home computer or printer on the fritz? Computers are available free-of-charge. The printers at the library are available for WiFi printing, scanning, or copying. Using the internet, you can order a print from home and pick it up any time within 24 hours. The charge for the printer is 10 cents per page b&w, 20 cents per page color. Each patron has a $1 printing credit each day (not cumulative), and scanning to email is free.

Use the Makerspace: Want to learn a craft or use a specialized tool? Makerspace Community workshops are located in Bldg 61 at the Main Library and Studio 54 at the NoBo Library. There you can take advantage of drop-in times to use a variety of tools such as 3D printers, button makers, digital embroidery machines, laser cutters (after a YouTube orientation), and more. Or, if you are not ready to do it on your own, staff will assist you, or you can sign up for a class. The Woodshop has extensive equipment ranging from Type A which requires little or no supervision, Type B which is more complicated, to Type C which requires staff supervision. RE-STUDIO at NoBo Studio 54 is an invitation to REuse, REpair and REimagine the things and materials around us.

Borrow a Culture Pass: Visit a cultural institution for free. Passes are good for 1 to 6 persons, depending on the institution. Choose from American Museum of Western Art, Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, Butterfly Pavillion, Denver Botanic Gardens, Dinosaur Ridge, Museo de Las Americas, Museum of Boulder, and WOW, World of Wonder Children’s Museum.

Borrow a State Park Backpack + Park Pass: Need some extra supplies for a visitor? Get the backpack for a week, and get a free park pass to boot!

All this a just a start. Go to the library website at boulderlibrary.org  and click your way around the site. It holds more than you ever dreamed of! Or maybe you’d like to just borrow a book.
