Please join us for our November 10th lecture on Zoom from 11:00-12:30,  when we will present our prestigious Margaret Willard Award to Katie Kramer, President and CEO of The Boettcher Foundation for her noteworthy contributions to her field and whose contributions ultimately benefit our community.  Her presentation on “Leaning in: Shaping Colorado’s Future through Leadership and Community Investment” will surely inspire you.

Every year The University Women’s Club recognizes someone from our community whom we admire for her contributions to her field and whose contributions ultimately benefit our community.  The first Margaret Willard Award went to CU graduate students, faculty, and those working for the University who were rising in their field of endeavor and deserved recognition.  More recently, UWC began to welcome nominees from the wider community.
As president and CEO of the Boettcher Foundation, Katie Kramer has come full-circle since 1993 when she was selected as a Boettcher Scholar.  Katie has been recognized as one of the Denver Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” and one of the Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce’s “Top 25 Most Powerful Women.”  Katie was a President’s Leadership Scholar at the University of Colorado Boulder and an honors graduate at the Leeds School of Business.  She completed her Executive MBA at the University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business.  Katie has served extensively on local and national boards and is regarded nationally as an expert in college scholarship selection processes.

Katie Kramer is currently a  member of the board of The University of Colorado Leeds School of Business, The Colorado Association of Funders, and The YPO (formerly “Young Presidents’ Organization”) of Colorado. She is past president of The National Scholarship Providers Association and  past chairwoman of The Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation.

Katie will talk about the transformational impact of leadership and how the Boettcher Foundation has invested historically in the promise of Colorado and the potential of Coloradans.  As a native Coloradan who personifies this promise and potential, Katie will also talk about her personal journey from Boettcher Scholar to CEO.  She will highlight the influences that inspired her along the way, connecting them to the Foundation’s core strategies of today.

Registration deadline for this lecture is November 9.

Who can attend UWC lectures?

UWC lecture/discussions are an important member benefit. Yet, they also offer an opportunity to showcase the value of belonging to UWC and are an important source of up-to-the-minute announcements.
To recognize these dual roles, the UWC board decided that for November, guests may also register at no cost.  It is hoped that our guests will decide to join UWC.  Our $35 annual dues are modest and bring even more  benefits!

The University Women’s Club was founded in part to promote friendship among its members.  With great disappointment the Board concluded in late summer that in-person Lecture Luncheons, one of our most popular and friendship-enhancing activities, would not be possible this year.  Undeterred, our program co-chairs, Norma Portnoy and Sharon Nehls, created for us a series of five Lecture Webinars on diverse topics to be experienced via Zoom, so that we could at least enjoy the mental stimulation of expert presentations.

Our first of these (October 13) was a fascinating introduction to documentary films.  Jack Hanley, a Boulder filmmaker, presented those who participated with a range of documentaries and described how they evolved in technique and in content over time.  He has generously provided the club with a list of resources to guide those interested in a deeper dive into the material. This list as well as a recorded copy of the Webinar is available on our website www.boulderuwc.org.

I wish to highlight that the members of your Board have made individual personal commitments to give of their time, skills and resources to the University Women’s Club in this challenging year. It would be gratifying to know that membership numbers would not decline, that scholarship contributions would continue to be robust, and that members would engage in the virtual activities we are offering in significant numbers.  Please make it a priority to support the club’s viability this year.

I want to give a sincere thanks to our many members who have responded so generously to our reminders that the financial needs of our non-traditional students have likely become even greater this year, since many part-time, on-campus jobs have gone away.    We had the pleasure of hearing virtually at our recent Lecture Event from one of last year’s recipients about how important our scholarships are for them, and this and other recipient videos are also posted on our website.  So let me encourage all of you to review these and, while you are on the website, take the opportunity to add a donation!

Also, while you are at the website, let me encourage you to go to the “Support UWC “ section, where you can learn how to sign up for the King Soopers and Amazon Smile charitable rewards programs.  Once you have signed up and designated the UWC,  whenever you spend money at King Soopers or Amazon, those organizations will automatically donate a certain percentage of that to the UWC.  What could be easier!

CALLING FOR UWC NOMINATIONS for President-Elect, Secretary-Elect and Treasurer-Elect in 2021-22.

The “elect” positions serve the following year (2022-23) as the President, Secretary and Treasurer.

Here is a brief description of each position:

• President:  Serves as the UWC figurehead and provides overall executive leadership. Chairs the Executive Board and provides supportive leadership to Board decisions and Board members.
• Secretary:  Attends and takes minutes at all Executive Board Meetings and General Membership Meetings.
• Treasurer:  Responsible for the oversight, management and reporting of UWC finances including bank account maintenance, financial transaction oversight, budget development, monthly financial reporting and all tax filings. (it’s not necessary to be a CPA for  this role, but a good bookkeeper with Excel and Quick Books experience is ideal.)

In addition to attending board meetings next year, the elect positions provide the opportunity to become familiar with the tasks of the executive positions as well as being available as back-up if needed.

Conducting Business: Lessons from the Podium
Brett Mitchell, Music Director, Colorado Symphony

You do not want to miss this informative and entertaining presentation by the extremely gifted yet humble Music Director of the Colorado Symphony, who gave his first public performance as a conductor at the age of 16.  Hailed for presenting engaging, in-depth explorations of thoughtfully curated programs, Brett Mitchell has led the orchestra in the majority of its classical subscription programs every season, as well as a wide variety of special programs featuring guest artists including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Renee Fleming.  Brett regularly collaborates with the world’s leading soloists.

Conductor Mitchell will share his journey in music and the lessons in leadership that he learned along the way.  You will hear about his fascinating journey leading to his appointment as Music Director of a major symphony orchestra at the age of only 37.  Brett will also discuss the Colorado Symphony’s unique business model and its day-to-day workings.

Your Brain on Art
Bill Stoehr, Boulder Artist

Have you ever wondered why a particular work of art appeals to you?  Attend this lecture to learn how the brain processes, responds to, and creates art.  Boulder Artist, Bill Stoehr will focus on the brain’s response to art and ways in which it is a window to the way that we perceive the world.

You will find out how a  greater understanding of the brain’s response to art can lead to improvement in education and medicine including helping to rehabilitate a brain after a stroke or debilitating disease.

Bill will also discuss his own creative process in which he creates ambiguity with abstraction and a few naturalistic cues, which enables viewers to create their own reality by completing images, creating narratives based on their own emotions.

March 9, 2021 – 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 pm.

How to Prevent Yourself From Becoming a Victim of Crime
Christian Gardner-Wood, Senior Deputy District Attorney; Lizbeth Parker, Specialist for the Community Protection Division, Boulder County District Attorney’s Office

Walk away from this presentation knowing more about how to protect your money and identity.  You will learn about the most frequent scams including the latest scams related to the COVID-19 pandemic.  You will learn ways to recognize and avoid these fraud attempts, whether they’re coming by way of phone calls, text messages, email, social media, mail, or even at the door.  The speakers will present information about identity theft and ways to keep your personal and financial information safe.

Christian oversees all Boulder County prosecutions for elder abuse and significant financial fraud cases, and Lizbeth handles consumer complaints and reports of fraud, scams, elder abuse, and financial exploitation from community members.
