PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
April has brought us Spring and with it, a boost of crisp air, warmer weather, and a feeling of restoration and fresh starts.
April also brings us the UWC Annual Scholarship Luncheon on April 18 at the Boulder Country Club. You can register for this delightful event using information found in this issue of MESSAGES.
We observe Earth Day on April 22 when we celebrate the achievements of the environmental movement and raise public awareness of the need to protect Earth’s natural resources for future generations.
I want to take this opportunity to spotlight endeavors made by the University Women’s Club that demonstrate how we strive to be eco-accommodating and how YOU, our members, are helping us to do so.
- UWC reduces paper waste and gas emissions in multiple ways:
- MESSAGES, our monthly newsletter, has been issued electronically since the 2008-2009 program year. It was printed and mailed to the membership prior to that time.
- We use online payment options for joining the organization, registering to attend events, and making donations to our scholarship fund. We want to thank UWC members for using our online system whenever possible.
- UWC provides tax-approved letters of appreciation to donors by way of email.
- Our Board of Directors holds virtual meetings that enable directors to stay off the road and thereby reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- The University Memorial Center, where UWC holds almost all live events during the year, buys locally grown vegetables whenever possible, which saves transportation emissions. This is a less toxic option than buying food from farther away.
- All UWC events offer a vegetarian option which is low-carbon and helps the environment.
Speaking of UWC events, be sure to save the date for the May 17 Honors Reception that will be held at the UMC South Terrace Tent.

We are thrilled that Chico’s FAS INC, which will include Chico’s, White House Black Market, and Soma, will provide the fashion show this year! Chico’s FAS INC has beautiful clothing with a unique style.
The Scholarship Luncheon is one of UWC’s important fundraising events for the scholarship program. This year donations to the scholarship fund are not automatically included in the cost of the luncheon because the country club costs have increased and we want to keep the attendance cost within reason.
This year we are making it even more convenient for members to contribute to the Scholarship Fund by providing two easy options to make your donation 1. Select the amount you wish to donate to the Scholarship Fund when you register for the luncheon 2. Bring your checkbook to the Scholarship Luncheon and donate using the envelopes that will be on each table.
Please take this opportunity to continue to support the success for the UWC scholarships!
The scholarship luncheon and fashion show cost is $45. The menu choices are Roasted Red Pepper Coulis Cauliflower Risotto with Glazed Mushrooms, Truffle Oil or Chicken Florentine with Creamed Spinach Souffle. You can specifyif you have dietary restrictions on the registration form.

Happy Hour/Tea Time Conversations via ZOOM
Happy Hour/Tea Time Conversations – a great way to get to know new UWC members, and a great way get to know old friends better. We meet via Zoom for about 50 minutes to an hour on the first and third Tuesdays at 4:00. Contact Kathy Randall (katherineran at gmail dot com) to reserve a spot for any conversation or to sign up for automatic inclusion for the UWC year. With automatic inclusion you will always get the Zoom invitation, but you are not required to come. This month we will talk about the changing social environment.
April 4: What are some phrases you don’t hear anymore or which don’t mean anything to the young people of today, or which don’t mean what they literally used to mean? What are some items kids don’t even recognize today?
April 18: What are some things popular now (something to do, a TV show, a phrase, an attitude, whatever) that is definitely not popular with you, or which actively annoy you?
Cards to UWC Members
Do you know someone who has suffered a personal loss, or is ill, or having an operation? Receiving a personal note from UWC might bring a little bit of happiness or peace or satisfaction knowing there are others wishing them well. If you do know someone, please contact Kathleen Salzberg, the UWC Card Acknowledgments Chair, with the person’s name, email, and (if appropriate) the reason for the card. Please send an email to boulderuwc@gmail.com with the subject “Acknowledgments Chair.”
SCHOLARSHIPS
Message from the Scholarship Chair
First, let me recognize the hard work of the UWC Scholarship Committee members. They have recently so thoughtfully and carefully read through the many applications for the UWC Scholarships that target non-traditional students at CU. These dedicated committee members are Judith Auer, Joyce Bograd, Sydney Hoerler, Diana Maiden, and Kathleen Salzberg. A big thank is also due to you, the UWC membership, who have donated so generously to the Scholarship Fund this year. We are again able to award 6 scholarships of $5000 each.
At the upcoming Scholarship Luncheon at the Boulder Country Club, on April 18 (11:00-2:00), our committee members will introduce you to the 2023 Scholarship Recipients . Mark your calendars and be there! The scholarship recipients will tell you a little about their life journeys and future goals and dreams. Their brief vignettes will give you an idea of how important your donations are for these remarkable young people.
You will find Scholarship Luncheon information and a registration link in this month’s MESSAGES, and also on our website (boulderuwc.org). When you register, you might also choose to make a donation as part of your registration – continuing to support our scholarship program. You can also support UWC via the new menu item (donate) that explains types of donations and how you can support UWC at no cost to you, just through shopping !
We hope to see you on April 18th!

DID YOU KNOW?
April 1 – April Fools’ Day
April Fools’ Day has been celebrated for several centuries by different cultures, though its exact origins remain a mystery. April Fools’ Day traditions include playing hoaxes or practical jokes on others. Speculation of its origin includes the notion that this celebration was tied to the vernal equinox, or first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, when Mother Nature fooled people with changing, unpredictable weather. See more about this fun-loving tradition at history.com.
April 22 – Earth Day
What’s the Significance of Earth Day?
To support environmental protection.
What’s the Earth Day theme for 2023?
Take Action. Be a part of the Green Revolution. For Earth Day 2023, we need to act (boldly), innovate (broadly), and implement (equitably).
What led to the adoption of Earth Day?
“The decades leading up to the first Earth Day, April 22, 1970, Americans were consuming vast amounts of leaded gas through massive and inefficient automobiles. Industry belched out smoke and sludge with little fear of the consequences from either the law or bad press. Air pollution was commonly accepted as the smell of prosperity. Until this point, mainstream America remained largely oblivious to environmental concerns and how a polluted environment threatens human health.”
“The stage was set for change with the publication of Rachel Carson’s New York Times bestseller Silent Spring in 1962. The book represented a watershed moment, selling more than 500,000 copies in 24 countries as it raised public awareness and concern for living organisms, the environment and the inextricable links between pollution and public health.”
“Earth Day 1970 would come to provide a voice to this emerging environmental consciousness, and putting environmental concerns on the front page.”(Information taken directly from earthday.org.)
What’s Happening at CU?
Conference on World Affairs
April 12–14, 2023

Big ideas. Endless discoveries. Celebrating 75 years.
Since 1948, CWA has inspired diverse dialogue about issues that matter. In 2023, the conference will extend the University’s focus on exploring the global climate crisis. Worldwide experts and our own faculty will offer challenging and hopeful discussions that examine a wide range of topics that impact our daily lives. Choose from over 25 panels that explore the climate’s impact on urban planning, employment, food production, and other aspects of daily life. Panelists will also consider how journalism and the arts affect public perception of a changing climate, can identify ways for humans to help, and much more.
Join for keynotes by environmental photographer James Balog, a CU Boulder alumnus known for his work documenting human effects on nature, and former Patagonia CEO Rose Marcario. Each will inspire fresh ideas and new perspectives. Students, faculty, staff, and the public are welcome to attend CWA events at no charge thanks to the support of our generous donors.
