PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Our 2025-2026 Slate of Officers-Elect has been voted on and we are so very grateful for their knowledgeable participation in the running of our Board. Congratulations to Sharon Nehls (President-Elect), Betty Johnson (Secretary-Elect), and Frieda Holley (Treasurer-Elect)
Stepping up as you have, assures the continuance of our Club’s goals, philanthropy and aspirations.
There are many exciting and fulfilling events on our horizon that you and a guest or two don’t want to miss: 1) Our final Lecture Luncheon features Dean Inniss of CU’s Law School on March 11; 2) The Opera Brunch featuring Maestro Carthy, conductor of “The Pirates of Penzance,” on March 16; 3) The Scholarship Luncheon where the conscientious work of the Scholarship Committee will reveal this year’s scholarship recipients. You’ll want to meet these outstanding scholars and hear their stories: our Scholarship Fund dollars hard at work!
The Honors Reception will be held on May 13 in the UMC Plaza Tent. Plans for this lovely event are taking shape, so watch for invitations in mid-April. During this free, culminating event of the year, the Margaret Willard Award, an award named after the University Women’s Club’s first president, brings highlighted attention to one who has made outstanding contributions to her community. In addition, we recognize the importance of our own leaders at this occasion as we recall and honor our past presidents, our past President Awardees, and our past Margaret Willard Award recipients. Last but certainly not least at this event, we pass the gavel to the next UWC president who will share her vision for 2025-2026 to encourage the fellowship, friendship, and philanthropy unique to University Women’s Club.
So be sure to sign up for each of these events via our website where you can also learn more about this organization of awesome women making a difference! I hope to see you and your friends at one of our planned events!

How to Attend to UWC Events at University Memorial Center (UMC)
Consider Taking the Bus
Note: All of the RTD busses require exact change.
-
RTD Trip Planner. Enter the address from which you are starting, then enter the address at which you want to end (Broadway and Euclid Ave, Boulder) and the time at which you want to arrive. Click “Plan Your Trip” and RTD will figure out your choice of routes including any transfers you have to make.
-
Consider using the following bus routes in Boulder: the SKIP, the 204, and the DASH, all stop on Broadway very close to the UMC. Other buses, including the STAMPEDE and the HOP, stop on 18th Street just behind the UMC.
-
Catch the HOP at the 29th Street Mall – The HOP is an easy ride from the mall and runs about every 10 minutes. Catch the clockwise bus on 29th Street just across from the former Macy’s entrance. It will take you to 18th Street behind UMC. When you return, take the counter-clockwise bus from the east side of 18thStreet. The HOP goes in a loop, so either direction will get you there, but it is a shorter route on the south side of the loop.
-
Park at the Table Mesa Park-N- Ride – 5170 Table Mesa Drive, Boulder. Board the DASH toward downtown Boulder. The bus stops on Broadway at Euclid Ave. There is no cost to park at the Table Mesa Park-N-Ride for the first 24 hours. The cost of the bus ride for seniors is only $1.50 round trip for the first 3 hours. If you have an EcoPass, you ride for free.
-
Park at the Table Mesa parking lot near Chase Bank and get on the SKIP, which stops on the north side of the Bank and takes you to the UMC. The cost is the same as the DASH.
Share Rides
Do you need a ride to the UWC Lecture Luncheons? Can you offer a ride to another UWC member to the Lecture Luncheons? The UWC Board is trying an experiment to see if we can facilitate attending the UWC Lecture Luncheons. Sign up here!!!
Drive and Park in Euclid Parking (Parking Garage Next to the UMC)
Options for Payment
- Pay at the Pay-station (Enter your license plate number and pay by cash or credit card.) The price is $2.00/hour for up to 3 hours. You do not need to place the receipt on the car dashboard.
- Download the ParkMobile app on your mobile phone. Enter the Zone Number found on the Pay-station, and select the desired number of hours to park. The duration can be adjusted as needed on your phone. (Link to ParkMobile – App for your phone)
Great news! The lower levels in the garage are no longer reserved for permit holders. The whole garage is available for visitor parking.
Happy Hour / Tea Time Conversations

It’s an opportunity to get to know fascinating women on a much deeper level.
Topics for March and April can be found below. Contact Andie Kutinsky (drandie at gmail.com) to get on the mailing list.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Message from the Scholarship Chair
The UWC Scholarship Committee’s individual members have been reviewing the very comprehensive student applications who seek to be recipients of a merit- based $5,000 scholarship for the next academic year. A tremendous amount of information is provided to reviewers.
The cumulative academic grade point averages (GPA) at CU and from the transfer institution are provided. We consider any family, personal responsibilities, challenges, and financial constraints. Extracurricular activities (sport, organizational, club) with any leadership roles are included. Volunteer public and community service is considered. Work experience, internships, as well as academic honors and awards are also assessed. Two essays are required. One describes the candidate’s future career plans. The other reveals their unique perspective, involving their personal experiences, skills or background to highlight their potential to make a positive impact in the future.
These non-traditional students have such varied backgrounds and skill sets. It can be challenging to select the most deserving applicants to receive our scholarships. We know we are making a significant impact on their ability to finish their undergraduate degree, and we take our responsibility seriously. After submitting our individual ratings to the university liaison, we will meet once as a committee to deliberate in person about the applicants and choose our scholarship recipients.
At the Annual Scholarship Luncheon on April 15, we will introduce these remarkable scholarship recipients to you. We will tell you about their journeys, and they will express how deeply grateful they are for our support.
Please donate generously to the UWC Scholarship Fund. Just go to the Scholarship link https://boulderuwc.org/uwc-donation-form/ where you can easily make an online donation. And remember, you can easily donate when grocery shopping at King Soopers or Safeway (see article below)

An Interesting Health Fact in Support of our Interest Groups
According to a publication distributed by the Cleveland Clinic, Heart Advisor, loneliness and social isolation are hidden threats to our heart health. The physical effects of loneliness and social isolation are significant and include higher risk of heart disease (29%), stroke (32%), dementia (50%), and premature death (60%). The article goes on to state that according to the US surgeon general, “feeling disconnected from friends and family has the same impact as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day.”
I can’t think of a better reason to encourage our members, especially those who might be living alone or experiencing isolation, to attend one of our functions and/or join one of our many interest groups.
Dates to Contemplate in March
March 8 – International Women’s Day
The 2025 campaign theme: “For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.” This year’s theme calls for action that can unlock equal rights, power and opportunities for all and a feminist future where no one is left behind. Read more at www.internationalwomensday.com
March 9 – Daylight Savings Time
Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 9.
In the United States, Daylight Saving Time starts on the Second Sunday of March and ends on the First Sunday of November. Only Hawaii and most of Arizona choose not to observe Daylight Saving Time.
Daylight saving time was originally enacted to conserve energy and fuel by giving people more sun in their days. On June 3, 2022, Gov. Jared Polis signed the Daylight Saving Time Year Round measure, HB22-1297, into law for Colorado. This measure would keep daylight saving time and get rid of standard time in the state. However, the Colorado law requires at least four other states in the mountain time zone (Arizona, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and the southern portion of Idaho) to pass similar laws for it to take effect. The Sunshine Protection Act of 2021, if passed by the US Congress, would enact daylight time permanently across the country.
March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day
St. Patrick’s Day falls on March 17 each year. Whether you’re Irish or not, chances are you’ve celebrated St. Patrick’s Day at some point in your life.
Though the day has morphed over the years into more of a secular celebration, St. Patrick’s Day was originally a religious holiday intended to commemorate the life of St. Patrick, the man credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland.
