PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Our calendar year was kicked off with a wonderful reunion/renewal/beginning at the Harlow Platts Park shelter on sunny Viele Lake in Boulder. I hope you had a chance to speak with Lynne Barnett, Chair of the Membership Coffee, to tell her how much you appreciated this delightful event! Lois Linsky, who chairs the Interest Groups, did a marvelous job attracting lots of new and returning interest in over 20 of our groups. The rest of the Board supported the event with registration know-how (our cool new QR code), delicious snacks, photography, and welcoming smiles. A success by any measure!
At the coffee, you may have heard Norma Portnoy’s announcement of all the fascinating lectures coming up, the first one of which is on Wednesday, October 9, when we’ll hear from Jessica Robblee – Producing Artistic Director of the Boulder Ensemble Theater Company. For those new to UWC, we meet on CU’s Boulder campus in Room 235 of the University Memorial Center. It is so easy to register! Just go to boulderuwc.org, look for Lecture Luncheons 2024-2025, click on the read more & register button, fill out the form that says Sign Up Here, and voila!, you’ve got it! When complete, you will receive an acknowledgement of your registration. Please note that the registration deadline for the luncheons is around three weeks before each event.
At this juncture as well as on other places on our website, you will find opportunities to donate to our Scholarship Fund. Another way that we receive monies to support our scholarships is through the Community Rewards Plans offered by King Soopers and Safeway. These programs are available to you by obtaining a card (Safeway) or registering your loyalty card (King Soopers) – details are outlined below in this issue of MESSAGES.
Getting to know each other is a great deal of fun at our HH/TT sessions on Monday afternoons at 4:00 p.m. Happy Hour/Tea Time Zoom hours are easy to access by contacting Andie Kutinsky at drandie305 at gmail.com. She will send you a link, you click to join, and you will see friendly faces! Although this is not an Interest Group, it is a recurring way to enjoy learning more about one another in a relaxed manner while sipping on the beverage of your choice!
Keeping in touch is easy and asking for assistance in any aspect of UWC offerings is just a phone call, email, or website away. A membership directory will be compiled and made available electronically for our great new 2024-2025 UWC year!
With deep gratitude for the University Women’s Club, I hope to see you at one of our many activities.
Anne Hudson
2024-25 UWC President

UWC NOTES
Membership Update
The UWC Membership ”year” is from August-July of each year. We start collecting annual dues August 1 and hope to complete the process by the end of September. During October we compile and distribute a Member Directory of all current active members – this directory is a great resource for each of us. When you receive yours in your email, please check your information and let us know if there are any errors!
Our membership is strong!
We ended last year with with a total UWC membership of 340. So far this year (as of September 15), 251 members have renewed, and there are 20 new members. All together those joining or renewing have contributed over $8000 to the scholarship fund. We are off to a great start!
If you have not renewed your dues you will receive a reminder email early this month. Please renew by October 10 to be included in the new UWC Member Directory that will come out October 15!
Some of you included names of your friends to be invited to join UWC – we have emailed them and welcome you to send us more names of people who might be interested in joining us for friendship, socializing and activities.
If you have any questions regarding UWC Membership, please email Merry Bullock, Membership Chair at uwcmembershipchair@gmail.com.

Recap – Honors Reception 2024
This last event of the 2023-24 UWC member year took place May 21 under a bright tent on the UWC terrace. The goal of the recipetion was to award the Margaret Willard Award for 2024, to recognize and thank those UWC members who have volunteered steadfastly throughout the year on the Board and in other roles, and to enjoy each others’ company for one last group event.
The Margaret Willard Award was presented to Donna Werner, who has devoted much of her life to service in the Boulder community. Also honored were the 2023-24 UWC Board members, past presidents, and past Margaret Willard recipients. Outgoing President Andie Kutinsky and incoming President Anne Hudson passed the gavel through a jointly-read poem. 2023-2024 President’s award recipients Frieda Holley and Merry Bullock were named and thanked. Honors reception chair Anne Hudson was thanked for the event.
After a great hors d’oeuvres buffet, the Colorado Buffoons provided a half hour of delightful a capella music. Even though the day outside was blustery, the atmosphere in the tent was joyful.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Message from the Scholarship Chair
How our scholarship changed a woman’s life
Zoe Kouremenos obtained her GED in 2013 while living in Denver. She was entirely responsible for finding a way to finance her higher education. She began at Arapahoe Community College as a business major. She always had multiple jobs, including providing child care as a nanny, selling bottled water at concerts (which actually was more lucrative than you would imagine) and starting a house cleaning service.
Zoe completed her associate degree and transferred to The University of Colorado Boulder campus, taking science classes as a pre-med student. She received federal student loans and continued for years to complete her degree while working as much as could, given the challenging science academic load she carried.
Although she had applied for other scholarships, she did not receive any. During the Covid Pandemic, she hit a wall, where she had exhausted federal loan assistance, but was not finished with her integrative physiology degree requirements. She applied through the financial aid office for our UWC scholarship and was chosen to receive it.
I was a new member to the UWC and attended the 2022 spring scholarship luncheon honoring the recipients. Zoe and I met in the parking lot and had a conversation. I decided to engage her cleaning services, and she has helped me since. I could not imagine a more resourceful, responsible, kind, bright and resilient young woman.
In 2023, ten years after beginning her higher education journey, Zoe graduated from the University of Colorado. She has expressed her gratitude numerous times regarding the scholarship and how it helped her to complete her undergraduate degree. Zoe inspired me to serve on the scholarship committee and to help people overcome their unique financial obstacles to achieve their educational goals.
Our scholarships really do help to make dreams come true.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
Elected UWC Board Positions
The UWC Nominating Committee is tasked with recommending nominees for President Elect, Secretary Elect, and Treasurer Elect to serve on the UWC Board next year (2025-26). The elected persons attend board meetings for one year as “elect,” to become familiar with the tasks of the executive positions and to be available as back-up. They then serve the following year (2026-7) as President, Secretary, or Treasurer…
Here is a brief description of each position:
- President: Serves as the UWC figurehead and provides overall executive leadership. Chairs the Executive Board and provides supportive leadership to Board decisions and Board members.
- Secretary: Attends and takes minutes at all Executive Board Meetings and General Membership Meetings.
- Treasurer: Is responsible for the oversight, management, and reporting of UWC finances including bank account maintenance, financial transaction oversight, budget development, monthly financial reporting, and all tax filings. The treasurer does not need to be a CPA for this role. However, good bookkeeping skills, and skill with Excel and QuickBooks are ideal.
If you would like to be considered for one of the “elect” positions or would like to recommend someone, please contact any member of the Nominating Committee which consists of Kathy Randall, Chair and General Membership Representative; and Frieda Holley and Andie Kutinsky as Board Representatives. If you would like more information, please contact Kathy Randall at katherineran at gmail.com
Margaret Willard Award
Margaret Willard was the first president of the Faculty Wives’ Club, which became our University Women’s Club. Each year we present the Margaret Willard Award to someone who exercises initiative in her endeavors and in doing so brings honor to all women and/or to our University of Colorado Boulder Campus.
Please submit a nomination by March 1, 2025. Nominations consist of the nominee’s name and a brief description of why they are deserving of the award. The form can be accessed here.
Questions? Contact Andie Kutinsky, Chair, Margaret Willard Award (719-492-7967)
DID YOU KNOW?
World Mental Health Day
In 1992, the World Federation for Mental Health and the World Health Organization declared October 10 World Mental Health Day, and it continues to be observed each year. The overall objective of World Mental Health Day is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health.
Facts to ponder:
- Globally, one in four people will need mental health care in their lives.
- More than 43 million Americans battle with mental health issues.
- Depression among youth has risen since 2012.
- Most Americans lack access to proper healthcare treatment.
Official Theme of WMHD 2024
On behalf of the WFMH President, we are pleased to announce the Official Theme of World Mental Health Day 2024 – It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace. How can I get involved? https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/campaigns/world-mental-health-day
Indian Summer
According to Wikipedia, Indian summer is a period of unseasonably warm, dry weather that sometimes occurs in autumn in temperate regions of the northern hemisphere.
How did Indian summer get its name?
One theory suggests that early American settlers mistook the sight of sun rays through the hazy autumn air for Native American campfires, resulting in the name Indian summer. Others speculate that Native Americans recognized this weather pattern and used the opportunity to gather additional food for the winter. The fact is that there are several theories about the origin of this name and we may never know for sure.
Is it time to retire the name Indian summer?
To this end I refer you to an article written by Ted Andersen, editorial assistant with SFGate.com.
“As the contemporary political climate in America offers revisions to both history and vernacular, it stands to reason that one day the term Indian summer could meet its social expiration date, and a new name may be needed for this little, second summer. But for San Franciscans who endure the cold gray skies from June gloom to “Fogust,” there’s no need to panic — Indian summer in the city is simply known as summer.
A Moment in CU History
One year after Colorado became a state and the University of Colorado was founded (1876), the first students were enrolled on the Boulder campus. Mary Rippon became the first female professor at CU in 1878. The first graduating class (six men) was celebrated in 1882. Not until four years later (1886) did the first female graduate from CU, seven years before Colorado women were given the right to vote.
The Faculty Women’s Club is Born
(Excerpted from Celebrating 100 Years 1919-2019 compiled and published by the University Women’s Club Centennial History Committee.)
According to Colliers Encyclopedia, at the end of 1919 there were 200 professors and instructors at CU and 1,868 students. In December 1919, Minnie Dutcher Norlin, wife of the newly inaugurated President of CU, invited several faculty wives to her home (now Koenig Alumni Center) to consider creating an organization for faculty wives and women faculty members to facilitate their friendships and, perhaps, determine and advance areas of common interest. There were forty-six women on the first membership roster.
The Faculty Women’s Club, and later the University Women’s Club, has expanded over the years to include service to the University. Today, the purpose of the Club is to promote friendship among the members and to strengthen their bonds of common interest, to provide assistance to the University and the University community as the UWC so desires, and to provide service to the University by annually funding scholarships.”
